This is about the embedding of video chips (up to 40 minutes worth mind you) in magazines. I would love to know your impression?
"Call us crazy, reviews Joseph Flately of engadget, but this whole idea of embedding video in magazines seems rather callous. Really, what better way is there to rub publishers' noses in the "death of print media" than by taking a perfectly good magazine and embedding a TV commercial? Apparently CBS doesn't see it that way, so they're taking Americhip's "multisensorizing®" technology to an ad insert that will run in the September 18 issue of Entertainment Weekly. The ad, which will only be seen by subscribers in the New York and LA markets, plays about 40 minutes of video and, presumably, some crappy audio. We've tracked down a YouTube demo of the device (or similar), and although it does little to change our ornery opinion of the matter, we suppose that if it results in one more Ghost Whisperer fan it'll be worth it. Decide for yourself after the break".
Americhip describes it's video chip technology as "revolutionary video in print". Multisensorizing that appeals for five senses - sight; sound; touch; smell; touch. Engaging customers, influencing the decision making process and elevating and elevating brand recall through those five technologies.
BBC World News reported this morning that each video chip costs the publisher approximately $20. dollars.
I think my five senses are abused as it is and one of the many things I value about print magazines is they take me to another place the minute the shiny, glossy pages hit my epidermis. They become a cherished item and if indeed I decide to part ways with one of them, they are 1oo% recyclable.
With this news this morning, I can't help but think of Don McLean's "American Pie" , with my dumbwit twist of course ~
A long, long time ago..
I can still remember
How that magazine used to make me smile.
And if I had my chance
that I could make those people dance.
and maybe they'd be happy for a while.
But September made me shiver
with every mag I'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn't take on more step.
I can't remember if I cried
when I read about the death of print
with the invention of Americhip,
but something touched me deep inside.
the day the music in me died.

Ugh. I absolutely hate the idea that we're progressing more and more towards having TV/computer screens on and in just about everything! I can't even take an elevator at work without watching TV and perhaps soon enough we won't be able to READ without one either.
Ewwww! No! How annoying. I don't need or want it in my magazines.
Very clever twist on American Pie. ;)
I'm not really crazy about all of this. Every place you like they've got some sort of tv or computer screen. You won't be able to use the bathroom without something blaring at you.
Too much. Too much noise. Too much information. Too much focusing on the trivial. Ick.
Great big NAUGHT from me. I'm so sick of being bombarded constantly with technology. Other than a computer and a cell phone for emergenices, I'm keeping myself as techie-free as a I can. So no way do I want to watch videos in magazines.
It's all getting to be too much. Cripes, pretty soon babies are going to know how to text before they can talk!!
Good to hear you enjoyed my pictures of Peggy's Cove :-) It was such a beautiful day when we were there, and I went totally snap-happy!!

Definitely naught! Too much hyper-media exposure as it is. Have a great wknd., Deb!
It's so Jetsons or some Tomorrowland dream suddenly come to life. I'm not in love with the fact that it's advertising, but I know for most new gadgetry, it's always advertising or some other big money industry that will be the early adaptors for the novelty factor. I'll be curious to see where this technology goes, or if it will just be too cost-prohibitive. And by the way, holy moly, the Fringe cover looks great. They look gorgeous!
thanks for popping over to my blog!
wowzers, this is interesting stuff. im torn between the tech-savvy part of me that thinks it's an amazing development and the girly part of me that like magazines for their pictures...not videos!
hmmm definitely food for thought!

A big no thank you for me. One of the wonderful things about reading a magazine is to be able to sit in a quiet place and indulge in fantasy - no noise required.
Shouldn't magazines be silent? First it was smell, now its noise. How will they assault us next?
I think it's ridonculous!!! More stupid plastic crap and ewaste. Just what we need. I'd rather see Domino make a comeback rather than add more to what already bores me!
I hate it. It takes away your quite enjoyment of a magazine. Persusing here and there as you like - your in control. This takes control -ghastly.
xoxo
no! this is a bad idea. and i'm not just saying that because i'm in the print business. awful. awful.
and i can't even wrap my head around it.
Hello darling, please forgive me for not visiting your lovely blog this week… life was very hectic at Rose Tea Cottage!!! Hopefully things will calm down this coming week.

Deb-So tacky, so wrong. Books are next. Have a great weekend.
This is new to me. Thanks for the heads up and it's a big old no from me. Just too much!
Well Deb, ....If you're getting it, it won't be long before we get it, here in the U.K. Soon, children won't even be taught to read...they won't need to, will they ? XXXX
I will take my magazine sans sound/vid chip.
HI Deb
What a strange way to 'read' a magazine. It is a little weird like something out of a futuristic movie. And yet another example of noise pollution when travelling on public transport or sitting at a cafe!!. So what I really want to know is how do does the sense of 'smell' come in to it? Actually.. probably better not to know..! By the way.. love the Hamilton design images in your sidebar.
Have a great weekend. xx Julie
More sensory overload!
No No NO ..... .
Hi. Im back. I have an award for you so put your party frock on and come to the Sunday Night Awards Bash.
Ugh, just what we need, more commercials! Can't leave the magazines alone?
No way! Enough is enough...leave our beautiful print materials quiet!
Naught!!! Me no likey one bit.
