Romancing Cairo

Grab your popcorn we're going into the cool of the theater to escape the August heat. You will however not be void of heat for long, just heat of another caliber. This movie may just melt your milk duds.

He who hath not seen Cairo hath not seen the world. Her soil is gold; her Nile is a marvel; her women are like the black-eyed virgins of Paradise; her houses are palaces; and her air is soft, as sweet-smelling as aloe-wood, rejoicing the heart. And how can Cairo be otherwise, when she is the Mother of the World?

--"A Thousand and One Nights"

Ruba Nadda - screenwriter & director

& a cast of 4 main characters

Patricia Clarkson as Juliette
Tom McCamus as her husband Mark
Alexander Siddiug as Tareq
Elena Anaya as Kathryn

U.S. release date - August 6, 2010

Juliette, a magazine editor, travels to Cairo to meet her husband, Mark, a UN official working in Gaza, for a three week vacation.

Juliette is a woman who married young and still ardently loves her husband, Mark, who works abroad. Their children have grown up and moved away. Life, doing what it usually does to a marriage, has replaced their hopes and dreams with accomplishment and responsibilities. In the back of her head, Juliette had thought that sooner or later, she and her husband would have time for each other, which was the reason for her trip to Cairo.

When Mark, Juliette's husband is unavoidably delayed, he sends his friend Tareq, who had been his security officer for many years, to escort her throughout the beautiful and exotic city.

Juliette, is suddenly forced to slow down and move on Cairo time.” This film has a West-meets-East quality to the unexpected, unrequited love between an Arab man and a North American woman. It’s also a throw to old style, classic films reminiscent of the restrained, emotional tension in the work of Jane Austen.

The last thing anyone expects is that Juliette and Tareq will fall in love.

Cairo Time is a love letter to a city intertwined with a love story about a woman.

"A quiet love story about a woman at a crucial point in her life" states Daniel Iron, producer for Cairo Time. “She has a private epiphany and things happen to her that no one will ever know. While they are not overtly life changing, they are fundamentally life changing inwardly and this illuminates the world for her. She finds an inner freedom that perhaps she always had, but being a working mother with kids and a husband who was away a lot, never had the opportunity to explore. This is very different from a “my husband and I are having problems so I’m going to have a fling” story.

Cairo Time is beautiful and sad at the same time. The emotions are not clear cut,
but there is clarity in their ambiguity.”

If you have a moment, grab a cool lemonade, sit back & observe the making of Cairo Time. Most definitely worth the few minutes of your day.

NOLA born Patricia Clarkson is so absolutely charming. She gives us '5o - something' girls a positive image. My two favorite roles of Patricia's have been the avant-garde pot smoking Aunt Sarah from HBO's 'Six Feet Under', and the complete opposite character of 50's socialite Eleanor in 'Far From Heaven'.

Patricia you make me proud x

I love her too and I hope I am as elegant as her when I get to that age (Whatever it may be! I can't tell from looking at her!)

It sounds like a sophisticated film which does not insult the intelligence of the viewer. So rare these days. And can I please have that turquoise dress.

Unfortunately, I know that this won't be playing in any theaters in my city, so I'll have to wait for the DVD. This looks like a such a beautiful movie. Patricia Clarkson is one of my favorite actresses. She's smart, beautiful, charming, and immensely talented.

She was fabulous in six feet under. This is why I love blogging. I haven't heard of this movie, and now because of your blog, I want to see it. I can already see the Jane Austen tension, and the agonizing twist that makes movies like this so bitter sweet.

Looks like a great movie - I'll have to check it out, especially as I"ve been to Cairo and loved the experience. I can however already tell that they're romanticizing the place a lot more than it should be... it is vast, dirty and very chaotic. Not nearly as romantic as it once was ;-) The pyramids are still amazing though.
