it's the eyes that have it

let's roll

On Growing Up - "I hand it to any and everyone who has made it past their late thirties and has any sense of contentment, because you know so much, and the anxiety can be so overwhelming — and managing the anxiety is a skill set that seems like a menu that changes every day."

On his Wife - "There's no understanding for me of the bigger picture in real time in a hands-on way without her. Because it was the perfect, perfect, perfect matching of personalities and gifts."On Having Children - "The big unspoken thing here is that we intend to have a family... Hell, yeah. Speaking of artifacts. The ultimate artifact of our love. In a onesie."On His Career Path - "The truth of the matter is, it's always been like this. It hasn't gone up from down; it's just that it's finally got wide enough that I can be contained."

On the Joy of Suffering - "no matter how much you shore things up and no matter how healthy-minded you are — isn't it supposed to be the joyful participation in the suffering of mankind?"

On Politics -"I have a really interesting political point of view", states RDJ in a 04/08 interview with David Carr. "it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics every since.”

Friend Mel Gibson - RDJ has been a close friend of Mel Gibson since they starred in Air America. Downey defended the actor/director during the controversy surrounding The Passion of Christ, and argued that "nobody's perfect" regarding Gibson's DUI.

Gibson said of Downey, "He was one of the first people to call and offer the hand of friendship. He just said, ‘Hey, welcome to the club. Let's go see what we can do to work on ourselves."

Gay Comment Gone Awry - Magnificent in Guy Ritchies latest cinematic Sherlock Holmes, RDJ caused a stir recently with comments that Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson could be lovers.

He said: “I think the word bromance is so passe. We are two men who happen to be roommates who wrestle a lot and share a bed."

Andrea Plunket, who holds the US copyright to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary creation, is unhappy with the comment says if Ritchie and the screenwriters want to take the character – who is played by Downey in the current movie – in that direction she will not allow a follow-up film.

According to the Timeslive.co.za, Plunket said: “I hope this is just an example of Mr. Downey's black sense of humour. It would be drastic, but I would withdraw permission for more films to be made if they feel that is a theme they wish to bring out in the future.

While filming "Sherlock Holmes" - RDJ required stitches to his lip and while smoking the character's famous pipe in one scene ashes fell onto his lap and set his trousers alight.

A source said: Robert leaped from his armchair and jumped up and down, slapping his crotch and howling, 'Oh God, I'm on fire!'

Luckily, Robert's co-star Jude Law - who plays Holmes' sidekick Dr. Watson in the movie - was on hand to extinguish the flames and save the star from singeing his privates

Downey dated Sarah Jessica Parker after meeting on the set of "First Born".

Having sung on many soundtracks, in 2006 Downey
finally released a CD titled "The Futurist"

When asked by Harry Smith on CBS's The Early Show who his model was for
Kirk Lazarus, his Tropic Thunder character, Downey laughed before responding,
"Sadly, my sorry-ass self."

Full of passion, devotion, these days life's a lark

mysterious, moody and sometimes quite dark

ready to rumble

a tug or a tumble

the smile that makes you forget that your married

tense, harried, no mind; just sit with Robert and exchange
thoughts of the mind.

shaded, striped, slicked, and so suave he is.
He's Chaplin, to Sherlock, to Kirk and a Tony;
to me Mr. Downey will never be phony.

He follows his own path, marching his own beat, & at times with sousaphone to boot,
and not that's it vital he makes lots of loot.

I know life with Downey would never be dull, a circus
perhaps or a cabaret.

or a game of peek-a-boo before a long lay

Stop what your doing and don't go a miss

for Downey does not get any better than this

FYI - every darn photo of he and his lovely wife Producer Susan Levin Downey, he's turned either towards her, leaning into her, kissing her head, or kissing her hand.
How wonderful is that?

{Go forth & live responsibly}

Wonderful post Deb. Just heard this wonderful quote and now it makes me think of him ...

"Be kind to everyone for we are all fighting a hard battle" - Plato

I am so inspired by his remarkable ability to land on his feet and stay real.
Stay Fabulous,

What a delicious post! I simply adore RDJ for his wit and dry sense of humor. Loved the Sherlock Holmes movie as well. I also know that Sherlock was rumored to have been gay long before Guy Ritchie ever touched the screenplay. Anyone who denies this obviously isn't very familiar with Doyle's work or has decided to skip the subtle references in the books. I think Plunket is just in deep denial.

Love the pic of him and his wife! That one shot showing his bare midriff is almost scary though!

Deb -- Great to see you "out and about." Downey, Jr., starred in a VERY underrated film called "Restoration" (with Meg Ryan, and a stellar supporting cast). That film has been a quiet one that I turn to now and again to be inspired and get a refresher when i'm a bit down. The film echoes so much of what Downey went through personally with his losses and, indeed, his restoration. I commend it to you for sure.

Now ... Haute-Shopper ... about Holmes being gay. Not so fast there. Having read through Sir Arthur's work twice (and seen every Jeremy Brett's performance), there are indeed several women that caught his fancy (if not his heart w/ Ms. Adler). So, at a minimum he's curious by nature, though perhaps not bi-curious, n'est-ce pas? But, Guy Ritchie sure did read into those pages big time; I agree with you there! Or, perhaps that's just several hundred years of latent British male boarding school revealing its atavistic nature once again? -Jg.

I just adore this man, saw Sherlock last week and loved it, as I knew I would.

RDJ has overcome such adversity.

He is such an interesting and thoughtful man ... I love how much he adores his wife.

Hi Deb,
I am running late for work, being glued to my computer reading your incredible post about one of my favorite "bad boy" character, his eyes...his smile... How do you do this? You are really remarkable to find the spirit and the strength to carry you on and yet produce such entertaining piece.

I have always liked RDJ, and am so happy to see his success after the mess he made of his life for a while there. He has a biting wit and intelligence quite different from anyone else, and is dripping with talent, charm and charisma. It's fun learning more about him here, especially his sweet relationship with his wife.

I've been thinking of you sweetie, hope that you're doing ok.

Dear Deb,
Oh, I love R D jnr.
I have to say that I agree with Fatscribe. 'Restoration' is one of my all time favourite films. It didn't get a lot of glory and, I don't know why. It is beautifully shot and with a wonderful supporting cast. If any of you out there have never seen it, try and find a copy.
I also loved him in 'Home for the Holidays'.
It was such a shame when he went 'off the rails' but, I'm so pleased that he seems to be back on track.
Lovely to see you back posting, Debs.
I have been thinking of you over the last week XXXX

Deb, you're getting really great at this. sherlock Holmes was fantastic, as was Chaplin, as was....

Dearest Deb
So great to see another of your brilliant post and on no other than the spectacular Mr Downey... he is such a diverse character and brings a punch to any movie he is in. I'm on the bandwagon here and agree that 'Restoration' was just such an incredible film for all the senses. I'd forgotten about it so will be trotting off to get a copy. The image of him sitting on the sofa [#7] sums up his quizzical nature. A rare quiet moment for the rambunctious Downey...

Well Deb you've been in my thoughts all this week and it is wonderful to see you back and may I say congrats on coming over to the dark side!! hehe... Take care of you xxx Julie

I was never a huge fan of RDJ's until I saw him in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints back in 2006 -- in that movie I realized how gifted he was, how his tragedies had informed his acting and made him REALLY REALLY good. And yeah, the fact that he's hot kind helps, too. :)

Barbara said...

Super post, Deborah! And right on target as I just saw Sherlock Holmes. I actually liked Jude Law better, but there you are. Downey was excellent and funny in it and I LIKED the movie (my daughter LOVED it).
He's also very short. Boo Hoo. It amazes me how many actors are.
And yes, he was wonderful in Home for the Holidays. (Has anyone seen that movie besides your other commentor and me?)
He does seem to have himself together now...good for him. I will look Restoration up on Netflix after reading the recommendations.

Glad you're back and hope all is well. You know we're all here for you!

My Hubby adores him LOL. We went to see Sherlock Holmes together a couple weeks ago. You know what movie I loved him in? Less than zero (i love 80s films).
How are you feeling? I've been thinking of you and hoping that you are okay.

Hello Deb darling so nice to hear from you, only now I am concern about you. Your comment did not sound like the perky Deb I have come to know and admire. Funny, my post included my Aunt Millie whose quote I will use here for you. When one of us is down she says “Girl, gather up your skirt and get on with it, life is too busy to wait for you. Smile so life can smile back at you.” You should see her face when she says this. Her expression is solely enough to make you forget all your problems. As for inspiration Deb darling, simply read the comments your followers leave for you. You make so many people happy by the beauty and knowledge you display here at your blog, luv that alone is enough for you to gather up your skirt and get on with it. So darling go grab a glass of wine, put on Michael Bublé ‘s “Sway” and dance the night away and first thing tomorrow morning, think of a great post and remember smile so that life can smile back at you. I wish I could reach into my screen and give you a big hug.
