Oh Jackie Turns 80

July 28, 1929 – May 19, 1994

Today is July 28 - the birthday of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. I could research this incredible woman until I was eighty years old. She is a woman like no other, in a time like no other. What I hope to bring to you is some simple facts, opinions, and images of more than our 35th First Lady, and more than a wife; she was a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a publisher, and above all a devoted mother. I hardly remember my young-life with out her presence - oh what a presence it was.

Sea Joy When I go down by the sandy shore
I can think of nothing I want more
Than to live by the booming blue sea
As the seagulls flutter round about me
I can run about when the tide is out With the wind and the sand and the sea all about
And the seagulls are swirling and diving for fish.
Oh – to live by the sea is my only wish.
Jacqueline Bouvier, age ten

She was only 23, working as an inquiring photographer for a Washington newspaper and taking in the capital night life of restaurants and parties, when she met John F. Kennedy, the young bachelor Congressman from Massachusetts, at a dinner party in 1952. She thought him quixotic after he told her he intended to become President.

"She really was the one who made over the White House into a living stage -- not a museum -- but a stage where American history and art were displayed," said Hugh Sidey, who was a White House correspondent for Time magazine at the time. He said she told him: "I want to restore the White House to its original glory."

Arriving in France, a stunning understated figure in her pillbox hat and wool coat as she rode with the President in an open car, she enthralled crowds that chanted "Vive Jacqui" on the road to Paris, and later, in an evening gown at a dinner at Versailles, she mesmerized the austere Charles de Gaulle.

When the state visit ended, a bemused President Kennedy said: "I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris -- and I have enjoyed it."

Before she left the White House, she placed a plaque in the Lincoln bedroom that said, "In this room lived John Fitzgerald Kennedy with his wife, Jacqueline, during the 2 years, 10 months and 2 days he was President of the United States -- Jan. 10, 1961 - Nov. 22, 1963." Mrs. Richard M. Nixon had the plaque removed after she and her husband moved in in 1969.

It happened in an interview Mrs. Kennedy herself requested with Theodore H. White, the reporter-author and Kennedy confidant who was then writing for Life magazine. She told him that the title song of the musical "Camelot" had become "an obsession with me" lately. She said that at night before bedtime, her husband had often played it, or asked her to play it, on an old Victrola in their bedroom. Mr. White quoted her as saying:

"And the song he loved most came at the very end of this record, the last side of Camelot, sad Camelot. . . . 'Don't let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot.'

. . "There'll never be another Camelot again."

quotes from Arlington Cemetery.net

The Jackie Kennedy style was not about her outfits or decorating her homes. It was more about the way she conducted her life. Jackie considered herself an aristocrat. She did not want to be known as the first lady, but as Mrs. Kennedy. Her understanding of aristocracy was specifically put by her as “courage, and after that, taste and responsibility – and endurance.” Jackie certainly had these qualities more than anyone else.

Jackie's style came from her life – east Hampton, the sea, horses; French tailoring of Hubert de Givenchy and Chanel, her love for books and her family. But even when she wore the most expensive European designs, she managed to look simple, athletic and truly American.

Quotes from Famous Women & Beauty -

Jacqueline once said that if you 'bungle raising your children nothing else much matters in life.' She didn't bungle. Once again, she showed how to do the most important thing of all, and do it right.

“Her two children turned out to be extraordinary: honest, unspoiled, and with a character equal to hers. And she did it in the most trying circumstances. They are her two miracles.

“At the end, she worried more about us than herself. She let her family and friends know she was thinking of them. How cherished were those wonderful notes in her distinctive hand on her powder blue stationary.

Happy 80th Birthday Dear Jacqueline

Coco Chanel once said it best ~
"Pour être irremplaçable il faut toujours se renouveler"

(In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.)

Oh my goodness, Deb, your posts get better and better. You make mine seem so shallow !!!! She was a wonderful women and that's from someone over the pond.I think we thought of her as American royalty and she did it very well and very quietly. It seems that all of these 'royal' families have very sad and traumatic lives and, I'm afraid I don't envy any of it...it seems to bring nothing but misery.....but, I mustn't be maudling..she was such a beautiful, chic , courageous lady and it was a very interesting read for me.As I think that I'm first to comment I just thought that I would tell you that you put AUGUST instead of JULY for her birthday.
Just to lighten the mood....I am sure that I..Jacqueline..was the inspiration for your post....I will say no more !!!!!!

That first photo choked me up. 3 beautiful things that are missing from our world- Jackie and the Twin Towers. whew, I wasn't expecting that to hit me quite so hard.

Moving on...

I used to work right near her townhouse and a few times while eating lunch in Central Park I'd see her taking a walk. She just had this air of sophistication about her.

Beautiful post Deb.
